The Department

Department of Civil Engineering of GITA AUTONOMOUS COLLEGE, Bhubaneswar(Erstwhile Gandhi Institute of Technological Advancement (GITA)) aims to produce high-quality technical and skilled work force to cater to the needs of Industry, Infrastructural Development Authorities, R&D organization, and Educational Institutions. The Department emphasizes on the broad grasp of the fundamental principles, deep understanding of the specialization, development of creative ability to handle the civil engineering challenges, and the capacity to adapt and solve problems of inter-disciplinary nature. The Department also encourages its students to engage themselves in various extra-curricular and co-curricular activities to improve their overall personality, and to induct the spirit of teamwork, leadership and organizational skills - essential to building a successful career.
The Department of Civil Engineering is one of the youngest in the Institute. It started during 2012-13 and the first batch students of B.Tech were passed in 2015-16. Department is endowed with well qualified, experienced and dedicated faculty and committed supporting staff. A congenial atmosphere prevails in the Department and in particular between the teacher and the taught. The placement from the first batch itself is excellent and beyond expectation. Apart from the construction and infrastructural Industries such as Royal Infra, M/s Infra Private Ltd, Anupam Electricals, Epic Research and NHAI etc., the Civil Engineering students are also got placed in software companies such as Infosys, CAD play etc. and Govt. Jobs. Good number of students are also opting for higher studies. Few students have also established themselves as Entrepreneurs in construction sector.

Proposed Laboratories

Advanced Structural Engineering Laboratory: The Department is under process of establishing a Advanced Structural Engineering Laboratory keeping in view of introducing M. Tech. Programme in Structural Engineering in the Department. Installation of a loading frame system along with the lifting arrangements would help for testing the beams and girders

GIS Laboratory: Due to wide application of GIS in the civil Engineering field, the course GIS and Remote Sensing has been introduced in the curriculum as an elective. Presently only theory part is being covered in the curriculum. The laboratory with relevant software can help the research scholars.

Structural Engineering Laboratory: The department is under process of establishing a Structural Engineering Laboratory keeping in view of introducing M. Tech. Programme in Structural Engineering in the Department. Installation of a loading frame system along with the lifting arrangements would help for testing the beams and girders. It is proposed to have an Universal Testing Machine (UTM) is required to be installed in the Structural Engg. Lab. for multipurpose use (Testing of Steel and Concrete).

Hydraulics Laboratory: Hydraulics Laboratory with a “Tilting Flume” is to be established in the Department. This is essential keeping in view of the future M.Tech. Courses in Water Resources Engineering and Advanced Fluid Mechanics (Integrated courses for Civil Engineering and Mechanical Engineering graduates).

River Engineering Laboratory: The river engineering laboratory would be required research works and after starting the M. Tech. programme in Water Resources Engineering

Departmental library

A Departmental library with sufficient books. journals and important documents has been established for reference of the faculty and students. A reading space with required amenities has been provided inside the library. Apart from the books acquired from outside and with the Departmental funds, some books have been transferred permanently from the central Library.

RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES

The Department emphasizes and encourages its faculty members for carrying out research activities in addition to their excellence in academics.

Individual researches by faculty members: During a very short span the faculty members ofthe Department haveachieved considerable publications to their credit in National and international Journals/conferences. Ph.D. guidance, Books published, The faculty members are also involved in guiding Research scholars Ph. D. fellows in different Universities.

Student projects: The students mostly carry out field-oriented projects during their tenure in the college to have sufficient knowledge to meet the challenges in the field works. The students interested for the analytical projects are also given due importance and technical support. Presently the students are carrying out a prototype field project “Construction of a waste water Treatment plant” in the GITA campus.

Research Projects: The Institution has always encouraged and insisted for availing research funds supported by various external funding organizations for carrying out research projects. The Department is trying hard for the purpose and applied for projects to different organizations, such as Ministry of mines, Govt. of India, AICTE, and DST etc.

Incubation Cell: Incubation Cell: The Department has established an “Incubation Cell” to incubate/promote new Ideas proposed by faculty members, students and outsiders. The faculty members of the Department cooperate in guiding the research works and the available infrastructure of the Department are being utilized for the purpose.

Innovations by Faculty:Presently, research works are being carried on for development of new construction materials. Presently, stressed is given for production of cheaper alternate materials for low cost housing by utilization of waste materials, those are on initial stage of work. The conventional earthen burnt bricks are becoming costlier day by day and availability has become lesser. Hence trial is being done for production of some alternate cost-effective material to be used for cheaper building. The works are on the above field with the following titles. Works are being carried onfor production of the following materials: 1. Papercrete Bricks: Bricks made of waste papers with other ingredients
2. Illuminating Bricks: Partial Transparent Bricks
3. Fly Ash Enriched Earthen bricks : Bricks made of Local earth and fly ash
4. Fly Ash Enriched Red mud Bricks : Bricks made of red mud and fly ash
5. Bio-Bricks:
Sample products of Papercrete Bricks and Illuminating Bricks are selected by MSME and sent to Govt. of India for approval.

CONSULTANCY

External consultancy: Having well experienced faculty members both from academics and Industries the Department has formed a “Civil Engineering Consultancy Cell” for taking up various Civil Engineering consultancy works. The Cell is headedby the Head of the Department. Presently, Department is conducting external consultancy works through various laboratory tests. Following Consultancy services are offered by the Department.
